Active Transportation Resources


Students who reside within walk distance of their school gain many benefits from a daily walk (or bike, or skateboard, or scooter ride) to school.

 Mental focus
Students who are physically active in the morning arrive at school alert and ready to learn - studies have shown that physically active students receive better grades. After a 20-minute walk student concentration is improved for up to four hours!
Environmental well-being 
Up to 25% of morning traffic can be attributed to the school commute. Reducing the number of cars at schools locations improves air quality and creates a healthier environment.
Fun and happiness 
Students who walk and cycle to school enjoy a deeper connection to thier community and nature; which leads to less stress and depression.
Graduated independence 
The walk to school provides students with an opportunity to become familiar with their community and to take on incrementally greater responsibility for themselves and younger children.

Safe Walking Fundamentals (Video)

  • Concepts covered include: walking on/off sidewalks, driveways, choosing a safe route, clothing choices.

Crossing Fundamentals (Video)

  • Concepts covered include: crossing techniques, stop-look-listen-think approach, adult supervision, and crossing in low light or bad weather.

Advanced Crossing (Video)

  • Concepts covered include: crossing at controlled intersections, marked crosswalks, stop-look-listen-think approach.

Parking Lot Safety (Video)

  • Concepts covered include: parking lot safety, listening to adults, awareness of surroundings, safe crossing techniques.

Assess Risks and Choose Routes (Game)

  • Educational game where children are presented with several different safety scenarios of which they must make safe decisions to win the game.
